Colossians 1:9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Ok…I’m going to say something here that’s very important to me….I don’t want just anybody praying for me. Don’t throw willy nilly prayers to the Lord for me! I won’t pray like that for anyone else either. Now let me explain before you say….”girl…what are you talking about?”
Before saying…”I’ll pray for you”…you should know what to pray for that person. You need to take time to discern the person’s real need. Now I don’t mean you have to be all up in their business….questioning them to the point they are uncomfortable with your prying….but use wisdom on how you should pray and what you should pray. You can really hurt someone feelings or misguide them by misdirecting what prayers are really needed.
When people you don’t know ask you to pray for them… I believe it’s OK to ask them if they are a Christian because they are the ones asking you for prayer. This might be a time the Holy Spirit is opening a door for you to share your faith. If the person is not yet willing to do so and they still want prayer…your prayer should be adjusted to God revealing Himself to them so that they might be blessed to know Him. Be very wise and discerning with these types of situations.
If you’re praying for a person who you know is a Christian…still be careful how you pray. Over the years… since day one of my walk with the Lord…many people have prayed over me. Some prayers were just what I needed and some were the absolute worst. God is working things out in my life and has bought me through many seasons of lessons, testing’s and trials. These things were all necessary for my spiritual growth. If God is doing something special in my life and you pray that He stops it without knowing His purpose and will for me… you are not really helping me with that type of general prayer. The other side of this is….How do you know what to pray for on my behalf? Should you pray that God answers the request straight out or should you pray that He gives me the strength to bear up under the trial and testing He’s allowed in my life? So how do you know what to pray? Well Gods word gives us instructions on how to pray so we should pray according to God’s will and with the boldness that He says we should have and are entitled to in being His child.
We should never just throw prayers out there like they are some hocus pocus sayings…God is not a genie in a bottle and that will answer to our every command, wants or wishes. We need to take prayer very seriously and take under close consideration that person s problem or situation we are praying about. We should take a brief moment out to think before we pray… when any prayer is requested of us and give thought in what to pray about. Even when praying for ourselves. A very important tip….pray with a clean heart because if you have unrepented sin in your life…. because of His holiness God cannot deal with you until you confess this and are washed by the blood of the Lamb. These are not my thoughts…… John 9:31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will.
Prayer should not be complicated. I don’t think God intended it to be so. But knowing Gods word and getting to know His character will help you in prayer. My 6 children knew how to ask me for things when they were little. They were little pros at it. I even taught them how…“Now ask mommy the right way…say please and thank you”. There is a way to talk to God and to let your request be known to Him.
So be careful how you pray for me…. or anyone. Pray for my strength in the Lord, pray for healing, finances, children, marriage, spiritual strength, and all sudden urgent situations with discernment and care. There is no way you can know exactly what the whole situation is…but if you know Gods word and you have your own ongoing relationship with the Lord… I trust you will approach the Lord with confidence in His abilities to help me through anything that I may be going through.
I may sound picky about people praying for me…but I tell you…when you know the right people are praying for you…it gives you strength and a hopeful attitude in a trial!!!!!
James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
Message for today: I do want people to pray for me…I need prayer…but please be….um…carefully and prayerfully and wise and discerning…and I will do the same for you.
P.S. – Why did I even feel the need to do this blog….Because in suffering from a chronic illness and having gone through many difficult trials in my life… I have been really hurt by some not all of the prayers from well-meaning people who have cut right through my heart. I have truly healed from this… but there are scars there. I’ve seen many other people hurt by this also. I don’t think anyone intentionally does this to hurt people. I believe in my heart of hearts that they really care…but carelessly pray amiss. In general… pray wisely for everyone’s needs and your own as per the examples in the following jokes:
