I was thinking to myself…what happened when Jesus washed the disciple’s feet? When Jesus looked down at their feet… did some have that big second toe? Did some have bunions? Did anyone have a hammer toe? Did their feet stink…they were fishermen after all? And worse yet…how about that toenail fungus? What did Jesus see? Did he even care? I don’t think so.

Why didn’t Jesus just hire someone to give these men a pedicure? If Jesus wanted to wash my feet…I’m so ticklish that He would have a really hard time because I would be bugging out. He would have to perform a miracle just to make me keep still LOL! I think washing a person feet is the most personal thing someone can do to another person. I had this done to me at a church service and I wash like don’t touch the bottoms of my feet because I will go crazy up in here! I just wanted this event to be over!

You know… if I was one of the disciples….I would tell Jesus that I need to go down to the lake first for a swim to wash my feet….  “I’ll be back in 5 minutes teacher!”

Jesus was making a really big point in washing His disciple’s feet in this true story and that is… we are to be servants just like He was when He was here on earth.

John 13: 14-17 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Serving others is what Jesus wants us to do and what are the benefits? The answer is in verse 17…. We will be blessed. Serving others has really blessed my life. I suffer with a chronic illness and have found out that when I give to others…it keeps my mind off of my problems so no matter how I feel….I find a way to serve someone else. Example…on days when I’m too sick to get out of bed I crochet blanks for a ministry or I’ll call someone else who is sick to encourage them.

Jesus set a great example and He said if we do as He did we’ll be blessed. Anybody up for a blessing?

Message for today: Serving others will make Jesus shine bright in your life!

Footnote: I thought it was interesting that the scripture mentions that Jesus took off His clothes and put a towel around His waist and when finished He put His clothes back on. I believe He wanted to show that He really got into it. This wasn’t some symbolic small action…He really performed the real full action of being a real servant. When we serve others let’s be very sincere in what we do and let our motives be pure and from the heart.
