Psalms 121:1,2

I lift up my eyes to the mountains
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

Do you need help?  At some point today…will you need help?  For me the answer is yes.  I need help sometimes just to get out of bed.  Sometimes I need help because I’m sick.  Sometimes I need financial help.  Sometimes I need encouragement….I think you get my point.  We all need Gods help every day.  There are also times when there is an urgent need or a very troubling situation…where do you look for help?

Where are you looking to for help?  In Psalm 121:1 it says for us to look to the mountains…because why?…vs2 says…because that’s where our help comes from. The bible is very clear about this…our help comes from the Lord!  We don’t have to walk around physically with our heads up in the air…we would run into something…but it’s more of an attitude of the heart and a focal point for our mind.

Looking down is only good for looking for lost money on the ground or looking at someone’s great pair of shoes or maybe a toddler crawling on the floor.  Maybe one might look down because they are shy or very sad.  I tell you…when you look up you must raise your eyes which raises your perspective on things.  Looking up is a more positive position to be in….physically, emotionally and spiritually.

But what should we look at?  We can look at the mountain.  I live on Long Island and I tell you it is as flat as a pancake…no mountains anywhere…so what do I focus on when I need to look up.  Sometime I look at the clouds in the sky and pretend they’re mountains…but what I really focus on is…..Keeping my eyes on the Lord!!!  Why…because I KNOW THAT’S WHERE ALL…I SAID… WHERE ALL OF MY HELP COMES FROM!  Nobody can help me like the Lord can!  When I focus my mind and my heart on the Lord…I get peace, grace, mercy, instruction, direction, clarity, strength, hope, encouragement, goodness, support, nurtured, and blessed.  In other words…I get help.  Why would I look anywhere else?

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Who else can you turn to for this kind of help?  Bill Gates is the second richest man in the world.  He’s worth 61 billion dollars.  If you needed help he could buy you a new house, pay for medical treatment or pay for many other things that money could buy.

But can his money buy?

  1. Help for your marriage?
  2. A cure your depression?
  3. Get your child out of jail for murder?
  4. Stop you from stealing, using drugs, committing adultery?
  5. Heal you from illness?
  6. Protect you from the devil?
  7. Get you Angelic help?
  8. Stop you from sinning?
  9. Salvation for your soul?
  10. An eternal life?

Maybe you think Dr. Phil can help you, Dr. Oz or the president of the United States?  Maybe your mom, dad or husband can help you?  Oh I know…surely your pastor!  All of these people have very limited ways that they can help you… but don’t look to others for your help.  God might even use them to help you…but He is the one who will impress upon them to help you.

So let’s reflect here.  I am to only look to God for my help because all of my help comes from the Lord.

Can we say this together?

I am to only look to God for my help because all of my help comes from the Lord.

When something happens in your life and you need help remember these three things:

  1. To Pray.  This will be your first instinct.
  2. You will have hope and believe that God has heard your prayers.
  3. You will keep your heart, your mind and your eyes looking to the hills/mountains/God… because YOU KNOW this is where your help will come from. Encourage yourself with this.

Message for today:  Where will you look to for your help?  You have a choice.  You can look at your problem or you can look to others or you can look to God!  God gave us Psalms 121:1,2 because He wanted you to have a focal point.  He wants you to look to the hills.  He wants you to ALWAYS be looking to Him for help.  Look up…go ahead…stop what your’re doing and look up and think this…”God you are my help”

Have a blessed day!
