Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Grieve means to feel sorrow or grief. It’s being overwhelmed with sadness or anguish about a situation that’s happened whether it happens personally or publicly. Grieve also means to lament or feel the loss of something or someone. When you read the scripture above and know that we can grieve the Holy Spirit of God…that grieves me…because the last thing I ever want to do is to grieve the Spirit of God. Many people ask this question…how does one grieve the Holy Spirit? Well I can tell you it can be done because the bible says so…and I have done it.
There’s so much that the Holy Spirit does for us. This is a very intimate relationship because the Holy Spirit dwells in us Christians and this means He is very very close to us. Because He is so personally involved with us… it would be very insulting to disobey Him or do the opposite of what He’s advising us to do. The word grieve is a word the bible uses to describe the feeling that the Holy Spirit experiences when we disobey biblical commands and spirit lead leadings.
I don’t want to list out all the things that can grieve the Holy Spirit because it would be a very long list…but when you do a bible study on the Holy Spirit…you will find out how much influence He has in our lives and you’ll know what grieves Him. I’ll give you an example later.
You can also know what grieves Him because when He does guide you and you don’t listen to Him…things will happen around you and things will affect you negatively. You can also know you grieve the Holy Spirit because you’ll feel sick or sad in your heart and you too will grieve because of your own disobedience.
The Lord taught me a lesson that I will NEVER forget. When I first became a committed Christian in 1984 I was asked by my pastor to sing at a prayer breakfast in church. I agreed to it. I‘d never sung in church before and was upset about having to sing. I told many people my displeasure about singing at this breakfast.
The day before the breakfast I got stricken with the most violent stomach cramps and you can guess the rest of the bathroom drama. While I was in the bathroom and feeling so sick… I said out loud…oh God!….Why all this pain?…Help me! The lord spoke to me and said…If He ever ask me to do anything for Him and I agree to do it…don’t complain. He said it would be better not to agree to it than to do it with a negative heart and spirit. I know I grieved the Holy Spirit. I’m very thankful to this day for the correction, patience and forgiveness from the Lord.
We must think about the Holy Spirits effect in our lives. He is a person and living being…the third person of the Godhead. It’s God the Father God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and they are uniquely intertwined in our lives. God loves us so much and has given us so much of Himself. He gave us His Son and He gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit. We have the wonderful fullness of God. Let’s be conscious of the divine purpose of the Holy spirit of God in our lives…Lets consider the daily things we do and think before we act or speak.
Message for today: Let’s not grieve our wonderful comforter and counselor. Grieve not the Holy Spirit. Accept His gentle leadings.

Hi I have been in torment for a long time , I lashed out in God in anger years ago . I was praying a really silly selfish prayer it was stupid but I was always told that you could bring anything to God . So I did . I told him how I felt . I asked God to give me a peace about what I was praying on . Asked him to let me feel His presence and to show me he’s still there . I went to bed after that and the next morning I woke up agitated and very angry with God . I lashed out in anger at Him because he didnt give me a peace .i said ” God I asked for a measly peace and you can’t even do that for me . Then I made this sarcastic harsh song to God making him . Before I sang the song I felt God tell me not to do it but I didn’t it anyways because I thought He will forgive me . So I did it . The song said He didn’t lift me up when I was down .!i kept saying it over and over . After I did it I felt horrible ! I feel to my face and begged God to forgive me . But I felt like it was no need to pray because I had just blasphemed the Holy Spirit . I’m scared I’m doomed for hell. Please be honest I’m the type that doesn’t want anything sugar coated . Please help

Good news Will…you have NOT blasphemed God!!!! People who blaspheme God are people who deny Jesus…who refuse the Holy Spirit trying to lead them to Jesus. The say NO to Jesus No to the Holy Spirit. They totally reject God’s gift of salvation as if to throw it back in His face. So if you’re tormented you are condemning yourself. You cannot make God get out of character for Him. He is loving and kind and loves you so! Look what people did to Jesus and He still offered forgiveness. Study your bible and the word will reveal to you all I’ve said. God bless you!!!

Grieving the Holy Spirit is when you are sinning and not repenting when The Spirit is telling you the right thing to do. This is different from the unpardonable sin which is totally rejecting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. If you die in this state you are not forgiving and your choice will result in spiritual death. My best advise David for anyone is to repent of sin, believe in Jesus Christ, pray and obey God’s word the bible. God bless you!!!

You are confusing grieving with the unforgivable sin. They are two different things. The unforgivable sin is rejecting Jesus Christ and staying dead in your original sin.

Lori If you are a Christian and you grieve the Holy Spirit…He WILL forgive you if you are really sorry. If you are not really sorry because you know in your heart you’re going to do it again and again…the Holy Spirit will keep trying to get you to obey Gods word(the Bible). We need to know what the bible says and do it. We also have to know that God is a loving God and is not looking to get us and make us feel really bad. He gently lets us know when we are doing wrong. Please don’t walk around condemning yourself. God bless you!

The only way you’re going to understand all of this is to study the bible and pray along with reading it.

Michael,,,,The only way you can grieve the Holy Spirit past the point of no return is to not repent of your sin and reject Jesus Christ. Period! When anyone truly is born again the Holy Spirit comes right away to live in you.

Hi this was really good ,I went to my first holy spirit day and asked for the spirit .the first hand that touched me i was given a direct image in my mind of the peace symbol and then they left the second a different energy came in with the fizzing sensation over my body ,then as though cold water was pouring into my body then an instant sick/vomity feeling.after wards i was made to feel as though i was a bad person who had done bad things and this was god telling me ,but this does not feel right ,especially as afterwards i felt i was rejected by those around me and the only thing i can think i do is bad mouth and usually what i say does come true or is right which is not an achievement but atleast i am aware

Everything that happens to us in the Lord and all of the Holy Spirits interaction with us is in the bible and we line ourselves up with that. That is our guide. This is what I go by…the bible.

Dear Tanya, Thank you so much for this post. I am so glad that you put what grieving the Holy Spirit is down in words that we can all understand. I have always wanted to know what grieving the Holy Spirit was and never got an answer from a minister or Bible study that made sense to me until now. Before I was always given these flowery phrases when all I really needed was the plain and simple words you used that make sense and one is able to remember. Thank you for how you explained what it is and how we can know if we do it. Bless you for your teaching. . . . . .I always learn so much from your blog.

Oh Praise be to God. you are soo right about this Tanya. disobedience causes us to grieve the Holy Spirit. I’ve been in that place myself and let me tell you it is hard to feel comforted when you are straying from His Voice. May we work in unity with the Holy Spirit so that we always remain comforted by His Voice and His guidance, Amen.
Thank you for this humble reminder Tanya.
God Bless You
Sherline
